.The growth of AI has revolutionized the world. Predictions are that AI will tremendously impact various sectors in the future. However, it is important to note that this is a relatively new technology. A hotly debated topic is the responsible use of AI.  With that in mind, many companies are now creating a roadmap that will help them to make the most of AI technology while remaining accountable. We began this discussion a few weeks ago with our blog,  A Guide to Responsible AI Exploration. But since this topic is so vast, we wanted to dig a little more into using AI responsibly.

Start with a clear understanding of the technology

AI refers to the ability of machines to perform human-like tasks, such as problem-solving, decision-making and understanding complex data. AI solutions can be developed using intelligent algorithms, neural networks, and machine learning techniques. Before starting with Open AI technology, it’s important to clearly understand the most common types of algorithms used. These include supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement learning, and deep learning.

Determine the ethical considerations

Implementing AI technology always raises many ethical considerations. It is important to specify the positive and negative effects of AI on the society, environment, and individual entities including privacy and security. It’s also essential that an organization understands the ethical implications of the AI technology on designing, developing and deploying solutions. This enables the organization to make informed decisions, minimize risks, and maximize the benefits of AI technology adoption.

Ensure transparency and explainability

If an AI system is unaccountable or incapable of providing explanations for its outcomes, it is impossible to understand how it reached a certain decision. It poses ethical problems and risks to users of the system. It is important to document and explain the data sources, models, algorithms that are used in building the AI system. This will ensure that the system’s decisions are fair, unbiased, and explainable to all users and supporters. Incorporate decision-making processes

To make responsible use of AI technology, it is vital to develop a decision-making process that considers ethical, social, and legal factors. This process will incorporate technologies for automatic audits, certification, and obtaining informed consent from stakeholders. Organizations should ensure the implementation of an ethical review board for the creation of AI systems, the validation of use cases, and the management of unintended consequences.

Encourage continuous learning and improvement

Continuous improvement is an important part of ensuring responsible use of AI. An organization should create an AI literacy program that teaches employees to engage with AI technology and understand its limitations and opportunities. It is crucial to keep a record of the limitations of the AI system and update it as needed. In addition, it is essential to develop a crisis management plan to protect the organization from technical and ethical issues caused by the AI technology.

Although AI technology has a great potential to improve many sectors, we must make sure that it is implemented in a responsible manner. Therefore, with the right strategies, organizations can establish an effective governance structure to ensure transparency, accountability, and explainability. Implementing AI systems responsibly requires teams to develop a clear understanding of the technology, ethical consideration, transparency, decision-making processes, and continuous improvement of the AI system. By doing so, we make sure that AI will bring positive changes to our world. Furthermore, we ensure the deployment will not negatively impact us.
